Things to Consider for Expats Returning to UK

We've probably heard stories about people moving abroad to start new lives. However, not all of them move abroad permanently. Some could have been offered temporary positions abroad and may decide to move back once they have completed the job. In other cases, it could be that people move back to the UK for personal reasons.

A good example occurred last year when the depth of the recession in Spain encouraged some expats to move back to the UK. If British nationals in other countries see tough times like this in the future as well, it could be that more will be returning to their home country.

What should you consider if you're thinking about coming back to the UK yourself?

It's good to consider your accommodation before doing anything else. This could depend on whether you'd sold up any property before leaving the UK in the first place. If you have a property back home, then you've got a big part of the equation solved from the start. If not, you need to consider whether buying or renting is best for you.

Some people are likely to opt for rented properties upon returning. You've got the task of setting up a new bank account if you've not kept one in the UK, so getting a mortgage on a property could be a problem if you've got to start from scratch.

It's important to think about employment too. If you have any contacts from your previous time in the UK, you might consult them to see if any job opportunities are available. Some people might make use of their contacts in this way, though one should not stop seeking out other job openings wherever they can.

If you've got the whole family abroad with you, things like schools will also be important. It might help to make a list of all the essential topics to focus on at this point, so you don't forget anything crucial to your efforts to return to the UK as smoothly as possible.

Another area you might want to consider focusing on is your emotions. How do you feel about coming back to the UK? Some people feel upset or disappointed, or they could feel they have failed. Even if it's not true, there's the chance of having those feelings. Be prepared for them and consider communicating your problems with other people if you think it'll help.

There's plenty more to focus on during repatriation too. When you finally buy a home for yourself back in the UK, one of the things you might want to sort out is home insurance UK. Some people find the process of reintegrating into the UK trickier than others, but the more you can do to smooth the way, the better.
