HOME has always been the best place for all of us. We get to relax every time we're home from a tedious day from work. It has always been a nice feeling to be "at home".

From that generally accepted belief come the idea of bringing work where we all are comfortable and convenient --- at home. Thus, work-from-home arrangement was born.

Twenty years back, work-from-home arrangement is not as convenient as it is today. There are many pre-requisites, conditions and deterring factors.

With Information Technology in place, everything seemed simplified insofar as home-based working arrangement is concerned. Today, the IT sector calls such arrangement between an employer and an employee as "telecommuting". It has become a common practice. In fact, there is a growing number of people who have started working under such condition and interestingly, they're doing fine.

The Consumer Electronics Association administered a study where they found out that 37 percent of the employed Americans are actually discharging functions away from home, and are most probably at home. The same study claims that these people would report to their office once or twice in a month only.

Accordingly, these working Americans have either invested or investing in modern day equipments to make work a lot easier and right inside the comfort of their very own homes.

The basic modern-day equipments that many American families are investing in are those which have something to do with Information Technology and Communications --- computers, mobile phone gadgets and network services.

Work-from-Home

There is perhaps no need for a lengthy discussion and long definition on what a "work-from-home" arrangement is. Obviously, it is a working arrangement where one gets to do his job and earn a living while inside the comfort of one's home. It is also possible that work may not be done at home, but at least away or outside an office or the working area.

Work-from-home arrangement is also called telecommuting. IT people call it either as e-work or telework. Now, under this arrangement, employees have prerogative where to do his work. It's the flexibility of having the privilege to choose his preferred working location. More often than not, it's at home.

The arrangement seemed cost-friendly and saves time too. Employees no longer have to travel on his way to work, no more driving and commuting hassles, no traffic congestion, no road accidents, no cost for transportation fares and gasoline. The travel time saved is being utilized to work. It makes one more productive. It also trims down long man hours, which translates to revenues.

The Role of IT

Information Technology plays a very crucial role in the work-from-home arrangement.

Telecommunication links have taken over travel time and physical presence of an employee at the workplace, using the computers and the internet.

As most of the industries of the modern day are heavily dependent on IT, workloads are also IT-based. Workloads are processed, stored and transmitted using the computers, internet and the web.

Online marketing, sales, shipment, delivery, and even money transfers are but a few of what the IT era has brought us. It made our work a lot easier, and our life a lot enjoyable and less tedious too. GP
